Retaining Ring Types and Functions

Retaining Rings of the External Type are grouped in blue of this linked screen. This group of rings are designed so that they expand to the proper limits, clearing the component outer diameter and return to and fit the accommodating groove.

Retaining Rings of the Internal Type can be found in red of this linked screen. They are designed to contract to the proper limits of the housing with clearance for assembly, and then return to and fit the accommodating groove.

Both types of Retaining Rings serve a variety of purposes, foremost usage being attained as a shoulder, and/or bearing surface holding components in place. Retaining Rings are easily adapted as spacers, or stops limiting axial travel, or as clamps exerting a holding force radially in the direction required.

Beginning with the external series of Retaining Rings, we are listing the standard gap profiles and corresponding wire shapes available for the rings listed in this electronic catalog. Shown are the available gap profiles we can provide, depending upon your individual requirements. In selecting a ring to your needs bear in mind that many of the catalog parts are stock items and because of this, delivery time can be held to a minimum.

	Standard gap for most external axially applied shaft rings. Available in full size range except as noted and in rectangular, round or square sections, special sections on request.
